Organization

Founded in 1998, OPEQ-Ordinateurs pour les écoles du Québec works to build a more equitable, greener, and more connected Quebec, one computer at a time. Our work rests on three inseparable pillars: circular economy, digital inclusion, and community solidarity.

Present in 5 regions of Quebec with 2 sorting centres and 5 workshops, ISO 14001 certified and recognized by ARPE-Québec, we are the only organization in Quebec operating certified reuse, employability, and redistribution to the most vulnerable communities simultaneously and at a provincial scale. In 2025, our actions helped avoid thousands of tonnes including 2,704 tonnes of CO₂, recognized with the Circular 21 Award.

We receive. Governments and businesses entrust us with their end

-of-life IT equipment. Every year, that means more than 80,000 computers collected, along with servers, cell phones, tablets, keyboards, projectors, and much more.

We revalue. Our technicians inspect, test, repair, and restore each device in our workshops across Quebec. This careful work, often carried out with and by people in training , transforms what would have been electronic waste into a functional tool and a learning opportunity.

We redistribute. Schools, libraries, community organizations, low-income families: those who need it most receive reliable, affordable equipment. More than 365,000 computers redistributed since our founding. More than 18,000 tonnes of materials diverted from landfills.

OUR MISSION

OPEQ’s mission is to contribute to a green and connected future through the reuse of computer equipment, fostering digital inclusion and employability across Quebec.

OUR IMPACT SINCE 1998

Equipment. More than 50,000 computers collected every year, more than 365,000 desktop and laptop computers redistributed, more than 18,000 tonnes of materials responsibly recycled.

Training and employability. More than 1,500 young people who gained concrete work experience, more than 50,000 hours of training provided each year, dozens of people with disabilities integrated into our teams.

OUR BENEFICIARIES

We serve the institutions and individuals who need it most: schools and school boards, early childhood centres, home-based childcare services, public libraries, non-profit organizations, non-profit housing co-operatives, and low-income families through the CLIC-OPEQ program.

This diversity of beneficiaries reflects our conviction: access to technology is a matter of social equity, not just technology.

OUR COMMITMENTS

Circular economy. Every refurbished device is waste avoided, a resource preserved, a CO₂ emission spared.

Digital inclusion. Every piece of redistributed equipment helps bridge the digital divide for a student, a family, an organization.

Employability and training. Every OPEQ work placement is a concrete entry point into the job market for a young Quebecer.

Territorial solidarity. Our provincial network ensures that the benefits of the digital circular economy reach every region of Quebec, not just major urban centres.

A MISSION THAT CONTINUES

For over 20 years, the CFS+ program, funded by the federal government, has supported our work on the ground. Today, OPEQ carries its mission forward independently, driven by its partners, donors, and the strength of its network.

The CFS+ program is evolving into Computers for Success Canada (CFSC-OPEC): same mission, same national network, same impact — with affiliates across the country.
